The ancient Pizzeria Di Matteo represents an institution in the history of traditional Neapolitan pizza. The Di Matteo family has always been involved in this work. Years ago it was called “the pizzeria of the students” because it hosted young people from all over Italy for their studies in Naples , has become over time a fixed stop fundamental for national and foreign tourists.
Our history
The ancient Pizzeria Di Matteo was born on 20 June 1936 from a family project of a man who over time it is made witness of the history of traditional Neapolitan pizza. Pizza has always been considered the food of the people , given its low cost which comes at the expense of one of the best flavors in the world . In the 60s the brothers Gennaro and Nicola Di Matteo gave life to an evolution of the restaurant taking it on two levels and making the family business increasingly florida . The focal point in the years of the ancient Pizzeria Di Matteo was to be a school of art and life for many young people who have embarked on a training course leaving it trained and prepared. Guests of the ancient Pizzeria Di Matteo famous faces of the entertainment world were guests. Marcello Mastroianni and Jack Lemmon (during the shooting of their film “Maccheroni” ), Luciano de Crescendo, Marisa Laurito, Paolo Villaggio and many others. We are currently in the 4th generation of pizza makers under the careful management of the sons of Gennaro and Nicola and a small group of historical collaborators.

The ancient Pizzeria Di Matteo is located in the heart historical center of the city of Naples. It is adjacent to S. Gregorio Armeno historical place with worldwide popularity where the shepherds fair is held every Christmas. Also a few steps away is piazza S. Gaetano with the historic church of San Lorenzo Maggiore , and from which you can quickly reach Underground Naples and the chapel of San Severo . The ancient Pizzeria Di Matteo is spread over two levels. The ground floor represents the environment in which the “magic of creation” and the sale take away em> span> and the upper floor where, divided into 5 spacious rooms, there are about 120 seats .
The visit of Bill Clinton
It was the July 1994 when Naples became the center of the world hosting the G7 . The undisputed protagonist of the event was the then American president Bill Clinton , who improvised a walk through the historic center of our city. During this brief visit he was attracted by the unmistakable scent of pizza from the ancient Pizzeria Di Matteo . Escorted as always by his bodyguards, he went up to the sales counter and ate (accompanied with a Coca Cola) the famous pizza a “wallet” , also called “a libretto” . He thanked, complimented and left to the applause and clamor of the people. That day he scored a historical event for the ancient Pizzeria Di Matteo and for all the people present.
